scope of work
UDC were appointed to deliver the refurbishment of Rhode Island Coffee’s Altrincham branch, a well-established coffee shop that has been serving the community for 25 years. over time, the space had become tired and outdated, prompting the client to seek a fresh, brightened interior to stay competitive within Altrincham’s thriving retail and hospitality scene.
the Altrincham store was to be transformed into the flagship location for the brand, introducing a refreshed design and identity that would be carried through to future Rhode Island Coffee locations. this project was therefore pivotal in redefining the brand’s visual identity and customer experience.
the refurbishment involved a full internal strip-out and fit-out. the existing engineered timber flooring was carefully retained, sanded back to the raw timber surface, and finished with a commercial grade clear lacquer to restore its appearance and durability. the design incorporated bespoke joinery and premium materials, including wallpaper imported from the United States, which contributed to the shop’s distinctive and modern aesthetic.
challenges faced
the refurbishment was completed on a fast-track schedule of just four weeks. one of the primary challenges was co-ordinating multiple trades within a confined site, requiring precise sequencing and close communication to maintain workflow and meet deadlines.
procurement was another significant hurdle due to the tight timeframe. early planning was essential, especially for key materials like the specialist wallpaper imported from the United States, which had longer lead times. timely delivery and installation were critical to avoid delays.
while the flooring was retained, it required careful on-site treatment. the team sanded back the engineered timber flooring and applied a durable lacquer, which had to be carefully scheduled to allow proper drying and avoid interference with other trades.
outcome
the project was delivered to a high standard and was very well received. the Altrincham coffee shop was transformed into a bright, contemporary and welcoming space that fully reflects Rhode Island Coffee’s refreshed brand identity. the finish was of high quality and the project was delivered on time and in line with the agreed four-week programme.
the client was very pleased with the outcome, and the store’s re-opening was a significant success. the project firmly establishes the Altrincham branch as the flagship model for future refurbishments across the brand.
